A Long-Term Resident’s Appeal for Fair Review and Resolution in Taiwan
I submit this statement with sincere respect for Taiwan’s democratic institutions, rule of law, and long-standing commitment to human rights protections. Taiwan is a place where I lived for more than a decade, built my professional work, and formed lasting relationships. It was not merely a place of business, but my home.
This statement is submitted in good faith for the purpose of independent review and clarification of matters concerning procedural fairness, proportionality, and access to legal remedy in connection with a legal dispute that ultimately resulted in my departure from Taiwan despite my strong wish to remain.
Several years ago, I became involved in a rental dispute in Taichung concerning unresolved safety and access conditions at a leased property, including the absence of a secure locking door and conditions that I reasonably understood to present personal security risks. My efforts to address these concerns ultimately developed into extended legal proceedings.
During a period of acute distress and concern for personal safety, I briefly disclosed the rental agreement online for documentation and advice. The document remained available for only two days, was removed promptly after objections were raised, and I issued an apology. I understood the matter to have been resolved at that time. However, this action later became central to continuing legal proceedings.
Throughout the process, I attempted to provide contextual evidence, witness testimony, and documentation explaining the surrounding circumstances. Due to language barriers and limited financial resources, I experienced substantial difficulty obtaining consistent legal assistance. Proceedings were conducted primarily in Chinese, and these conditions significantly affected my ability to fully understand the process and participate on an equal basis.
The consequences were severe. After years of proceedings and increasing legal pressure, I departed Taiwan under substantial legal pressure and the imminent prospect of custodial sanction. This outcome was profoundly difficult given my longstanding connection to Taiwan and the life, work, and community I had established there.
I share this experience with humility and respect for Taiwan’s legal system. Taiwan is widely recognized for its commitment to fairness, human rights, and justice. My hope is that careful and independent review of this case may contribute to continued strengthening of procedural safeguards, equal treatment, and proportional outcomes for all residents, including foreign nationals.
My sincere wish is for fair resolution, closure, and the opportunity to return to Taiwan peacefully.
