Deep in the warm green forest, in a tall old tree, there lived a little brown bat.

Her name was Bat.

Bat was small. Bat was kind. And Bat had a secret gift.

Bat could see with her ears.

In the dark night sky, she made tiny sounds. The sounds came back to her. And that is how she knew where to go!

But Bat had one little problem. A sad little problem.

Nobody ever heard the end of her name.

"Hello! I am Bat!" she said.

"Nice to meet you, Ba," said the Cat.

Bat felt small. The best part of her name flew away. The t was gone.

One day, Bat was tired. She wanted to rest.

"May I sit on your mat?" she asked the Frog.

"On my ma?" said the Frog. "What is a ma?"

Oh no. The t flew away again!

The sun was hot. Bat wanted shade.

"May I wear a hat?" she asked the Duck.

"A ha?" said the Duck. "I do not have a ha!"

Poor Bat. Her words kept losing their tails.

"Ba. Ma. Ha," she whispered. "No one hears all of me."

A soft tear rolled down her cheek.

Then Bat remembered something. By the river, there was a little school. And in the little school was a kind old Beaver, who helped everyone learn.

So Bat flew to the river.

The Beaver was there, reading a book. He looked up and smiled.

"Hello, little one," said the Beaver. "What is your name?"

"I am Ba," she said sadly. "I think."

But the Beaver did not say "Ba." The Beaver listened. He listened with great care, the way he always did.

"I think," said the Beaver gently, "your name has a little door at the end. And the door is closed. Shall we open it together?"

Bat nodded.

"Every word has a beginning, a middle, and an end," said the Beaver. "The end is important too! The end has a sound. We must let that sound fly out — like a little bat into the sky!"

Bat's ears went up. She liked that.

"Put your tongue up high," said the Beaver. "Then… let it go! T! Feel the tiny puff of air. Put your paw near your mouth."

Bat tried. "Ba…"

The door stuck.

"Try again," said the Beaver kindly. "Open the door. Let the sound fly."

"Ba… t."

A tiny puff! Bat felt it on her paw!

"Again!" said the Beaver, smiling.

"Ba-t. Bat. BAT!"

The T flew out like a little bat into the night sky!

Bat laughed. Bat clapped. Oh, it felt so good to say all of her name!

"Now," said the Beaver, "let us open more doors!"

Together they said the words. And every word ended with the little door opening wide:

cat · hat · mat
sat · rat · flat!

Each t flew up. Each t was free. Bat could hear every door click open.

The next morning, Bat flew back to her friends.

She was not shy now. She took a big breath. She opened the little door.

"Hello, everyone. I am BAT!"

The Cat's eyes went wide. The Frog smiled. The Duck flapped her wings.

"Bat!" they all said. "Of course! Hello, Bat!"

And for the very first time, every friend heard all of her name. Every part. Right to the end.

Bat felt warm and happy, from her ears to her toes.

That night, Bat flew high into the sky. She made her little sounds, and the sounds came back, the way they always did.

But now she knew a wonderful secret.

The end of a word is like the end of a song.

You must never let it fly away too soon.
